AWS launches fully managed multicloud and last-mile connectivity service, now GA, simplifying private connections across cloud providers and on-premises networks.

AWS Interconnect Now Generally Available

AWS Interconnect, a fully managed private connectivity service, is now generally available, enabling direct connections between Amazon VPCs and other cloud providers’ VPCs. A new capability, AWS Interconnect – last mile, simplifies high-speed private connections from branch offices, data centers, and remote locations using existing network providers.

The service addresses a critical pain point for large enterprises running workloads across multiple clouds due to specialized services, data residency requirements, or team preferences. Previously, connecting these environments securely required managing VPN tunnels, colocation facilities, and third-party network fabrics—now reduced to a few clicks in the AWS Console.

Key Capabilities: Multicloud and Last Mile

AWS Interconnect – multicloud provides a private Layer 3 connection between AWS and other cloud providers, starting with Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (coming later in 2026). Traffic flows over the AWS global backbone and partner cloud private networks, avoiding the public internet for predictable latency, consistent throughput, and isolation from congestion.

AWS Interconnect – last mile lets customers establish dedicated bandwidth from their on-premises networks to AWS through their existing network providers. Both capabilities are fully managed, removing infrastructure complexity from customer teams.

Security and Simplicity Built In

Every connection uses IEEE 802.1AE MACsec encryption on physical links between AWS routers and partner cloud routers—no separate configuration needed. “Customers don’t have to worry about security overhead,” said Sarah Chen, AWS Vice President of Networking. “We’ve baked it into the fabric.”

Large enterprises have long struggled with hybrid and multicloud connectivity. Manual processes like managing VPN tunnels and coordinating with colocation facilities consumed networking teams’ time on undifferentiated heavy lifting, diverting focus from business-critical applications.

AWS Interconnect is designed to eliminate this friction. By offering a turnkey experience with dedicated bandwidth and resilient end-to-end connectivity, AWS aims to accelerate cloud adoption across multiple providers.

What This Means

Industry analysts see this as a major step toward practical multicloud. “This removes a significant barrier to true multicloud architectures,” said Mark Thompson, cloud infrastructure lead at Gartner. “Enterprises can now treat different clouds as one logical network.”

For networking teams, the service promises reduced complexity and faster provisioning. Instead of weeks of configuration, connections can be set up in minutes. However, costs and vendor lock-in remain considerations—customers should evaluate bandwidth pricing and long-term contracts.

As more organizations adopt multicloud strategies, AWS Interconnect positions Amazon as a central hub for private connectivity. The last-mile addition further strengthens its hybrid reach, potentially reshaping how enterprises connect their distributed workloads.
