macOS 27: What to Expect at WWDC 2026 and Beyond

Published 2026-05-03 19:21:57 · Technology

Apple's annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in 2026 is set to introduce the next major version of macOS, designated as version 27. The keynote is scheduled for Monday, June 8, where Apple will showcase the latest software platforms. Developers can expect the first beta to drop immediately after the event, with a public beta following in July and a full release to all users in September. While the current macOS 26 (Tahoe) set the stage, the internal code name for macOS 27 remains under wraps. Below, we break down the key features and changes anticipated in this update.

Siri Upgrades

macOS 27 is rumored to include a dedicated Siri application that maintains conversation history, making the assistant more akin to ChatGPT or Google Gemini. Beyond this, Apple is expected to finally deliver the personalized Siri capabilities previewed at WWDC 2024. For example, Siri will be able to retrieve flight details and lunch reservations from Mail and Messages—features originally shown on iPhone but now expanding to iPad and Mac. Apple CEO Tim Cook confirmed during a recent earnings call, “We look forward to bringing a more personalized Siri to users coming this year.”

Expanded Apple Intelligence Features

The partnership between Apple and Google, announced earlier this year, will bring Google Gemini into the fold for powering future Apple Intelligence features. While the full extent of these additions is unknown, they extend beyond Siri to include other AI-driven tools. Expect deeper integration of Gemini across the system, though Apple may reveal specific capabilities only during the keynote.

Touch Interface for Mac

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is developing a touch-optimized interface for macOS, likely tied to a forthcoming touchscreen MacBook Pro or MacBook Ultra expected by early 2027. In this interface, touching a button or control would bring up a contextual menu around the user’s finger, and tapping menu bar items would enlarge them for easier selection. These touch optimizations may be hidden in macOS 27 until the hardware launches.

Improved Stability and Performance

macOS 27 is being compared to 2009’s Snow Leopard, emphasizing quality and underlying performance over flashy features. Apple plans to squash numerous bugs, enhance stability, and introduce refinements to the Liquid Glass design language. Users can expect a smoother, more reliable experience.

Dropping Intel Mac Support

With macOS Tahoe (26) being the final major release for Intel-based Macs, macOS 27 will be compatible only with Apple silicon Macs (M1 chip and newer). However, Apple will continue issuing security updates for select Intel models for at least a few more years.

No More AirPort Time Capsule Support

macOS 27 will drop support for AirPort Time Capsules and other storage drives using that protocol. Users relying on these devices for backups should plan alternative solutions before upgrading.
